35+ Times People Didn’t Follow a Recipe and Then Complained About it Online
There are a variety of recipes that you can find online. Some people just aren’t capable of following a recipe step by step. Sometimes, they make adjustments to a recipe when trying it out for the first time — and this is where it all goes wrong…
Not Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving is a great time to show off your cooking skills and impress your guests. Still, when you’re not so familiar with the recipe, you may want to read through the steps first. You don’t want to end up like this person — who confused “sage” with “sausage.”

A Solid 5
You always want to be careful if you have a pet around while you’re cooking. Otherwise, you might end up just like this person. She made Bolognese sauce using a recipe she found online, except she had tripled the quantity and left it on the counter to cool while she ran a quick errand.

Her eight-year-old pup managed to get the pot off the cooktop and gobbled it all up! Even though the cook wasn’t able to taste the sauce, it sounds like Jake loved it!
Highly Recommend
Sometimes, you just want to switch up the entire recipe and make something else entirely just by following the same steps. This happened with Andrew who decided that he would use pastry instead of the mashed potatoes that the recipe called for.

Not only that — but he also completely replaced the prawn-and-fish mix with a combo of mushrooms and chicken. Still, despite the fact that he made something totally different, he highly recommends the recipe!
The Truth
The internet is full of people who just sometimes say things that don’t really make any sense. In this case, we’re referring to one woman who decided to leave a bad review on a tasty recipe, and why? Because her husband is diabetic and isn’t able to eat the food that the recipe calls for.

We’re sorry… but that’s not the recipe’s fault! Luckily, this poster called the woman out and proceeded to leave five stars on the recipe to counteract the one-star review. Sometimes people just have too much time on their hands.
Forget the Chocolate!
Who doesn’t love chocolate brownies? They’re sweet, gooey, fudgy, and crunchy all at the same time! The best part? They’re made out of chocolate. Well, as it turns out, this person thought otherwise.

This person went as far as to email the person that posted the recipe to ask why the brownies didn’t come out as expected. You decided to ditch the main ingredient — that’s why!
Not Interchangeable
Listen — we all love cheese and we’ll never say no to it… unless you’re looking to use it as a replacement in a brownie recipe that you’re using. That’s where we draw the line.

No matter how much you love cheese, it doesn’t go with everything, despite what Yuwana may think. Luckily, Jessica was there to set things straight — it is not recommended to substitute shredded cheddar cheese for coconut.
Inescapable Goo
It’s completely okay to admit that cooking is not your cup of tea. Some people just aren’t made to cook or be anywhere near a kitchen — especially someone like Paul, who was sure he had done something wrong while following the steps in the recipe.

Paul just ended up making a dough that, according to him, didn’t just stick to him but the entire kitchen. He was very confident that he made an inescapable goo that could be used to subdue big rioting mobs.
Too Busy Yapping
Sometimes, when you try out a recipe and you really enjoy the end result, you just want to make it again because of how much you loved it the first time around. However, it’s probably not the recipe’s fault when you end up burning the second batch.

Well, this woman decided that she would leave a one-star review on a recipe that she loved the first time she tried it. Why? She burned the batch of brownies the next time she made them… because she was on the phone with her sister.
Rubbery Cake
Anyone that has ever had some sort of experience in the kitchen knows that cooking and baking are totally different. While you can play around with the amounts and ingredients in a cooking recipe, you have to be quite exact when it comes to baking.

Of course, there are certain substitutes you can use but it’s best to look that up before getting started so you can understand how all the ingredients interact with each other. Unfortunately, this poster didn’t get the memo when they attempted to make a birthday cake for their father. That’s okay! Someone should probably let them know, though, that you should never skip out on the baking soda if you’re looking to make a fluffy cake.
Not the Right Balance
Here we have yet another mishap with a cake recipe! We’re telling you, people — don’t mess around when it comes to baking! Your pastry will suffer in the end! Instead of following the recipe step by step, this woman decided to increase the number of ingredients mentioned.

She used half a cup of coconut, pecans, pineapple, raisins instead of a full cup and went with three cups of carrots instead of two — all to balance out the recipe. Unfortunately, it didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to and so, they left a one-star review on the recipe.
Gochujang Tuna Salad
There are a lot of people who just love gochujang tuna salad. It’s much better if you can find an easy recipe to make it at home. Even though this person left a whole four-star review under this recipe, though, he made something else entirely.

Since he was unable to buy tuna from the market, he went ahead and used ground turkey. Even though he has no idea what gochujang actually is, his wife didn’t let him have it, so he went with ketchup.
Ain’t Got Muffin on Me
Looking for a yummy snack that’s perfect if you’re in need of a quick bite? Muffins could be exactly what you need! There are tons of online recipes to choose from!

You can even substitute certain ingredients for others, like what Rae did, for instance. She swapped out milk for applesauce, which is a well-known alternative. Just a heads up if you do this, though — the texture of the muffin will not be the same so don’t expect it to be. Applesauce may be a good substitute for milk but it has an entirely different texture so…
On a Roll!
Thanks to the internet and the plethora of recipes that come with it, many people have turned bread-making into a sort of hobby. Rather than going to the bakery and picking out their favorite already-made loaf, there are tons of individuals that now follow a recipe and bake their own homemade bread! This person thought they would do that too.

The only problem is that they had complaints about the terms used in the recipe. They weren’t expecting such flowery, wishy-washy language — but rather a concrete scientific methodology. If you ask us, we’re not entirely sure this poster is even creative enough to bake…
Not Puddin’ Up With It
Yorkshire pudding is quite a common side dish in the United Kingdom. It is loved by the English and depending on the type of ingredients used with the pudding, it can be served in a number of ways.

The main ingredients that are more commonly found and used in Yorkshire pudding are eggs, milk, flour, and oil. This person left a review, saying that the recipe is amazing. It turns out, though, that if you don’t use the flour, you get somewhat of an omelet.
Same, Same But Different
Sally right here saw a recipe for potato leek soup and she wanted to make it immediately. However, she had neither leeks nor potatoes so instead, she used celery, chopped red pepper, and onion.

Sally then continued by adding flour and a generous amount of dried tarragon. After she mixed in the flour, she used some vegetable broth, milk, and potato flakes. She basically whipped up a whole new recipe and still left a five-star review for the potato leek soup.
The Pesto’s Yet to Come
Pesto traditionally consists of crushed garlic, European pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, and hard cheese such as Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino Sardo. From the sounds of it, though, this person ended up making hummus — with a twist!

We bet that it was absolutely delicious with some pita chips, but there really was no point in leaving a review considering that they omitted more than just the cheese!
Life’s Batter With Cake
Yes, yes. You did switch the recipe around quite a bit. This isn’t the first time we’ve mentioned it but we’ll say it again — you shouldn’t mess around with the recipe when it comes to baking. Don’t substitute ingredients or play around with the amounts unless you have experience with baking or have done the proper research beforehand!

Otherwise, you might end up with something that you’re just not happy with. And if you’re anything like this person, you’ll end up blaming the recipe when that happens… rather than yourself!
Lemon or Lime Surely Is Fine
It’s totally fine to swap out certain ingredients if that’s your prerogative. Still, it’s important to remember that the end result just won’t be the same. This poster should have known better than to leave a review about a recipe that they didn’t follow.

After all, the recipe for lemon mascarpone specifically called for lemons — and while we can understand the fact that this individual didn’t have lemons on hand, we can’t really grasp why they were so confused by the end result considering that they chose to use limes…
The Blame Game
Of course! It’s obviously the recipe’s fault that you ended up burning your food! We may all not think that way, but this person definitely does. They said they would never try the recipe ever again because they took a two-minute bathroom break while they were simmering orange peels in a mixture of water and sugar.

Their explanation was that it was already simmering for 10 minutes and by the time they came back from the bathroom, the kitchen was full of smoke. Some people really just don’t belong anywhere near a kitchen!
Cinnamon Challenge?
Let’s get one thing straight, people — cumin and cinnamon aren’t even remotely the same. While the two spices do pair together nicely, you shouldn’t necessarily substitute one for the other when a recipe calls for a specific spice. Although this recipe called for cumin, Jessica decided to use cinnamon instead.

Naturally, when she posted a review, the person that posted the recipe in the first place clarified that the listed ingredients included cumin… rather than cinnamon. Oh, Jessica.
Sorry, Beth
While we can appreciate this person’s honesty, we’re not entirely sure why they decided to make oatmeal raisin cookies if they’re not a fan of them. Fine — they wanted to make a yummy treat for everyone in the family, but they could have baked something totally different.

Instead, they baked something they knew they wouldn’t enjoy. The worst part? They took their taste preferences out on the rating, despite the fact that everyone in the family liked the cookies. It’s not Beth’s fault that you don’t like oatmeal raisin cookies!
Ignorance Is (Not) Bliss
Angelina here is quite opinionated about a recipe that she chose to follow. In her eyes, a bowl of broth is not a meal. But if that’s the case, why would she decide to make this recipe in the first place?

We think it’s safe to say that this woman would not fare well in any Asian country — especially considering the fact that she thinks chopsticks are dated. After all, most of the world has been using utensils for centuries… ugh.
Making a Soda Pop
These cake disasters seem like they’re never-ending. This person thought it would be a great idea if they took some chocolate cake mix and added Coca-Cola to it.

Even though it somehow actually turned out to be something of a cake, it was apparently really moist — when did that become a bad thing? Oh, it also tasted like Coca-Cola. Whoa, you don’t say…
Buttermilk Recipe
There are some cases in which it can be hard to find buttermilk at your local grocery store. There are also times where you don’t want to run to the store for buttermilk just because you ran out. The best solution to that would be to make buttermilk at home.

This person, however, seems to have a misunderstanding of what buttermilk actually is. They went ahead and complained about the end result because it tasted nothing like ranch. Mmm, perhaps they should learn the difference before they step foot into the kitchen.
When Life Hands You Lemons…
You would think that someone who chooses to make a lemon meringue pie would understand that the end result will taste lemony and citrusy. It seems, though, that Abby didn’t really consider that when she followed the recipe.

And aside from that, she had the audacity to complain about the fact that she made a huge mess in the kitchen. She was so upset that she went off at her boyfriend for no reason. Neither of those things sounds like the recipe’s fault — or our problem!
Did You Turn the Oven On?
Have you ever been so busy that you forgot to do something that you were supposed to… like turn the oven on? This poster left an awful review for a chicken strip recipe, and all because their chicken came out raw.

Luckily, Elizabeth — the person that originally posted the recipe — was there to help their unforgiving reviewer figure out what the problem was. And, honestly, we have to say that she was very patient in her response considering the fact that her recipe received a one-star review.
Oh, Jane
Another person that thought it would be a great idea to rate and leave a review on a recipe that they’ve never even tried before. Aside from the fact that she’s never even tried this cinnamon roll recipe before, she also didn’t offer that information up until the very end of her review.

Now, if the recipe from America’s Test Kitchen is really as good as you say, then why were you even looking at other cinnamon roll recipes? Huh, Jane?
Berry Soggy
People seem to conveniently forget about the fact that more moisture or liquids in your recipe can make the food soggy. This person wanted to try out a strawberry bread recipe and added an extra cup of strawberries while following the rest of the recipe properly.

She probably just thought it would enhance the strawberry flavor. In reality, though, the bread turned out to be overly crisp on the outside and quite soggy on the inside. She left a one-star review, only because she wanted to submit a review.
The Recipe Should’ve Considered That
The people on the internet can be so absurd with their demands. William left a two-star review on a recipe just because the end result didn’t look like the pictures in the recipe.

He blamed the recipe — along with the owner of the recipe — saying that they should have taken into consideration that William here isn’t actually the best cook. This just goes to show how people over the internet can have the most unusual demands at times.
Making the Recipe Healthier
Don’t get us wrong — it’s great to want to maintain a healthy lifestyle and diet. But, still, you should take into account that omitting certain ingredients or spices in a dish will impact the flavor.

Sharmin Karim, in an attempt to make the recipe healthier, swapped the sugar and salt with some fat-free ranch. She then complained about how the kabobs were a bit too bland for her. At least her husband enjoyed them, though!
Over the Leftovers
Too much of anything can be a bad thing — this phrase is true for anything. Yes, even food. No matter how much you love a certain dish, there’s a good chance you’ll get tired of it at some point.

This woman said that even though her husband never really complains about the food, after three straight days of having the same dish for lunch, he wasn’t too happy. Huh… we wonder why.
Seafood Allergy
Apparently, a recipe is worth giving three stars if you’re allergic to most of the ingredients that it calls for — or because you don’t have some of the items at hand. At least, that’s what this person thinks.

We’re sorry that the end result was such a disappointment but perhaps you should consider looking for a different recipe next time around! Maybe something that you have the ingredients to, or something that you’re not actually allergic to!
Substituting Honey
Not only did this person leave a raving review about the recipe, but she also left a rant about her boyfriend. Apparently, she thought that her current living situation was relevant enough to include in her review.

Not only that, but she also substituted honey for the agave nectar that the recipe called for. Why? Because she’s a millennial, of course! We’re not sure how those two things connect, but we’ll just go with it for her sake…
I Can’t Eat This
Here comes another person who left a bad one-star review on a recipe that was perfectly fine. And, why? All because they can’t eat it due to their dietary restrictions.

We’ve asked this before, and we’ll ask it again — why is that anyone’s problem but your own? If you can’t eat certain foods, then don’t look for a recipe that calls for those exact items. It’s really not that hard, people!
One Star for the Perfect Recipe
You know those recipes that are just so good, you can’t help but leave a raving review so other people are more prone to try it? Well, this person did just that. But, it seems as though they have no concept of how the stars work.

They shared a nice little review about how amazing the recipe was, and that they wouldn’t change a thing, but they left one star.
Peanut Butter Sure Is Great
You may love peanut butter a bit too much, so much so that you aren’t satisfied just eating it in your breakfast PB&J sandwich. You want it to be the main attraction in every other dish that you make.

The recipe most likely called for melted butter, but Sneha here loves peanut butter so much that she asked if it was okay to swap out the butter with peanut butter. Of course, it was a no from the cook, but they did suggest that a bit of peanut butter with butter was okay.
Cucumber Sandwich Sans Cucumber
Here’s yet another instance in which the main ingredient was omitted from the dish because the individual didn’t have it at hand. This person attempted to make a cucumber sandwich — but without the cucumbers.

Apparently, using the sprouts and avocado they had lying around just didn’t do it for them. And for that, they left a one-star review. We have no words.
The Secret to Beef Stroganoff
There are people who have secret special ingredients that just instantly make a dish that much better. This person has a secret to make beef stroganoff a lot better. According to them, slow cooking stroganoff is the better option, especially when they add their secret special ingredient.

They said that the recipe without their secret ingredient just isn’t any good. Still, they never really mentioned what the ingredient was so it looks like the rest of us are stuck with a basic version of beef stroganoff.
