Weaving together the Italian history would surely take a lifetime. However, Dolce & Gabbana did it all in one arguably impressive collection. On their SS21 runway, the theme was clear: patchwork. The designers referenced their backlog, taking into consideration the spring 1993 runaway as part of their inspiration. Both collections included details from the ‘70s, but the presentation felt refreshingly modern.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Patchwork Collection

Dolce & Gabbana is inspired by and dedicated the presentation to the city of Sicily. They wanted to capture the true spirit of Italian artistry with handmade craftsmanship, or “fatto a mano.” Within each patchwork look, and there are many in this 98-look collection, was a demi-couture approach of unique pieces that thread together the past with the present. Fabrics from the brand’s archives were interwoven with newly acquired textiles. The results are beautiful – a mix of dots, polka, floral brocades, denim, and much more that were cut together in a multitude of silhouettes for every fancy and fit.

Dolce & Gabbana’s Inspiration

The chaotic richness was a true whirlwind of details that span decades, but it was brought into 2020. An Instagram post set the scene for those who are watching the event from home. The short video revealed that the D&G’s longtime show venue Metropol had been transformed with bright print collages – walls, runway, benches, everything. The hashtag #DGSicilianPatchwork further spelled out the theme of the season, on which the Italian designers elaborated in a video message. Dolce, who was born and raised there, stated that given his long experience of being inspired by Sicily, they wanted to tell that on this island, different cultures could be found and dominated, from the Arabs to the Spanish, to the Normans.

Here are some of the pieces that were presented in the stunning and colorful Patchwork collection.
